You logged into the MCA portal and your DIN shows "Deactivated due to non-filing of KYC." Now every filing for your company is stuck until this is fixed.
Or you just heard that the KYC rule changed in 2026 and you're not sure if you even need to file this year.
This guide covers exactly what changed, who needs to file, what happens if you miss it, and how to get it filed correctly today with SVT & Associates.
What Is DIN KYC / DIR-3 KYC?
DIN KYC — filed through the DIR-3 KYC form — is how the Ministry of Corporate Affairs confirms that a director's personal details, mobile number, and email address on record are current and genuine.
Every individual who has ever been allotted a Director Identification Number (DIN) falls under this requirement, whether or not they are currently an active director in any company. It exists to stop dormant or fake DINs from sitting in the MCA database unchecked.
Two versions of the form: If nothing has changed since your last filing, you can complete a simpler web-based confirmation. If your mobile number, email ID, or any other detail has changed, you must file the full e-form DIR-3 KYC instead, digitally signed and verified by a practising professional.
The New 3-Year Filing Rule — What Changed in 2026
Effective 31 March 2026, DIN KYC moved from a compulsory annual filing to a once-every-three-financial-years cycle, while the due date itself stays fixed at 30 June.
This is the single biggest change directors need to understand this year. Under the earlier system, every DIN holder had to file DIR-3 KYC every single financial year without exception. That requirement has now been eased.
| Before the 2026 Amendment | After the 2026 Amendment |
| DIR-3 KYC filed every financial year | DIR-3 KYC filed once every 3 financial years |
| Due date: 30 September / 30 June depending on year | Due date: 30 June of the applicable filing year |
| No exemption for unchanged details | No fresh filing needed if details are unchanged and KYC was filed in the current 3-year block |
| Any personal detail change reported at next annual filing | Change in mobile, email, or address must still be updated within 30 days regardless of the 3-year cycle |
⚠️ Don't assume you're exempt this year. The 3-year cycle runs from your DIN's original allotment year or your last KYC filing — not from a common start date for everyone. Confirm your specific due year with a CA before assuming you can skip filing.
Who Needs to File DIN KYC?
| Category | Applicability |
| 👤 Any individual allotted a DIN on or before 31 March of the financial year | Must file, even if not currently a director in any active company |
| 🏢 Directors of active private/public limited companies | Mandatory — required to keep the company's ROC filings unblocked |
| 🤝 Designated Partners of LLPs | Same requirement applies through the DPIN linked to the DIN |
| 💤 Directors of dormant or inactive companies | Still required unless the DIN itself has been formally surrendered |
| 🌏 NRI and foreign national directors | Required, with a foreign mobile number and email verified through OTP |
Documents Required for DIN KYC Filing
To complete a full DIR-3 KYC filing, your CA needs identity proof, address proof, contact details, and a valid Digital Signature Certificate.
- PAN card (mandatory for Indian nationals)
- Passport (mandatory for foreign nationals and NRIs)
- Aadhaar card
- Current residential address proof — utility bill or bank statement, not older than 2 months
- Personal mobile number for OTP verification
- Personal email ID for OTP verification
- Passport-size photograph
- Valid Digital Signature Certificate (DSC) of the director
Tip: The mobile number and email must belong to the director personally, not the company. Each gets verified independently through a one-time password during filing.
What Happens If You Miss the DIN KYC Due Date?
Missing the 30 June due date results in your DIN being marked "Deactivated due to non-filing of KYC," and reactivation requires filing DIR-3 KYC along with a flat late fee of ₹5,000.
1
DIN Deactivation
Your DIN status on the MCA portal changes to deactivated. You cannot use it to sign or file any form as a director until KYC is completed.
2
₹5,000 Flat Late Fee
There is no scaled or reduced penalty — the late fee is a flat ₹5,000 regardless of how many days you are late, payable before the DIN is reactivated.
3
Company Filings Get Blocked
If a director's DIN is deactivated, the company cannot process ROC filings that require that director's digital signature, creating a compliance backlog.
4
Reputational Flag on MCA Records
A deactivated DIN is publicly visible on the MCA master data, which can raise questions during due diligence, loan processing, or tender evaluation.
Common Mistakes That Delay or Reject a DIN KYC Filing
1
Using an Expired or Mismatched DSC
The Digital Signature Certificate used must be currently valid and registered against the director's PAN. An expired or mismatched DSC causes an instant rejection.
2
Outdated Address Proof
Address proof documents older than the MCA's accepted window are routinely flagged. Always use a utility bill or bank statement within the last 2 months.
3
Skipping the OTP Verification Window
The OTPs sent to mobile and email during filing expire quickly. Delaying verification often forces you to restart the entire filing session.
4
Assuming the 3-Year Exemption Applies When It Doesn't
Directors sometimes skip filing assuming they fall under the new 3-year gap, when in fact their specific cycle year requires filing. Always confirm your due year before skipping.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is DIN KYC or DIR-3 KYC? +
DIN KYC, filed through the DIR-3 KYC form, is the process by which every person holding a Director Identification Number confirms their personal details, mobile number, and email ID with the Ministry of Corporate Affairs, so the MCA database stays accurate and free of dormant or fake entries.
Is DIN KYC now required every year or every 3 years? +
Under the MCA amendment effective 31 March 2026, DIN KYC has moved from an annual requirement to a once-every-three-financial-years cycle, with the due date remaining 30 June of the applicable year. Any change in your mobile number, email, or address must still be reported within 30 days regardless of this cycle.
What happens if I miss my DIN KYC due date? +
Your DIN gets marked as "Deactivated due to non-filing of KYC" on the MCA portal. You cannot use it on any company filing until it is reactivated, which requires filing DIR-3 KYC along with a flat ₹5,000 late fee.
Can I file DIN KYC without a Digital Signature Certificate? +
No. DIR-3 KYC must be digitally signed by the director using a valid DSC, and in most cases also certified by a practising professional such as a Chartered Accountant. If you don't have an active DSC, SVT & Associates can guide you through getting one first.
Do NRI and foreign national directors need to file DIN KYC too? +
Yes. NRI and foreign national directors must file DIR-3 KYC using their passport as identity proof, with OTP verification sent to their personal foreign mobile number and email ID.
How do I check if my DIN is already deactivated? +
You can check your DIN status for free on the MCA portal under the "Verify DIN/DPIN" or director master data search. If it shows "Deactivated due to non-filing of KYC," you need to file DIR-3 KYC with the applicable late fee to reactivate it.
Does DIN KYC apply if I'm not currently a director in any company? +
Yes. The requirement is tied to the DIN itself, not to whether you currently hold a directorship. As long as your DIN was allotted on or before 31 March of the relevant financial year and hasn't been surrendered, you must file.
Can SVT & Associates help if my DIN is already deactivated? +
Yes. Our team handles both fresh DIN KYC filings and reactivation filings for deactivated DINs, including the ₹5,000 late fee payment, so you can get your director filings unblocked quickly.
