GST ITC Reconciliation Service

GST Input Tax Credit (ITC) Reconciliation Service

GST ITC reconciliation compares the input credit in your books with GSTR-2B and supplier filings to find credit you can claim, credit you must reverse and vendors who have not filed. SVT & Associates does it monthly or for past years and prepares the response if a notice has been issued.

ITC mismatch types and action
MismatchTypical causeWhat we do
Invoice in books, not in 2BSupplier has not filed or reportedHold the credit, follow up with the vendor, claim when it appears
Different amountTyping error or credit note not reflectedClaim the lower amount; request correction by the vendor
Wrong GSTIN or invoice numberData entry errorAsk the vendor to amend in GSTR-1
Credit claimed but ineligibleSection 17(5) blocked item or personal useReverse with interest and report in GSTR-3B
Credit of the previous yearClaim after the section 16(4) deadlineCheck the deadline; claim only if within the time
Time limit

What are the rules that can cost you credit?

Credit must be claimed by 30 November following the end of the financial year to which the invoice relates, or the date of the annual return, whichever is earlier. A recipient who has not paid the supplier within 180 days must reverse the credit. Credit on goods lost, stolen or written off must be reversed. Credit for exempt or non-business use is proportionately reversed under rules 42 and 43. We build the workings for each, so the reversal and its interest are known in advance. For monthly filing see GST return filing. For a notice on a credit mismatch see GST notice reply.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between GSTR-2A and GSTR-2B?
GSTR-2A is dynamic and changes as suppliers file. GSTR-2B is static for each month and is the statement used to claim ITC in GSTR-3B. We use 2B for the claim and 2A for follow-up with suppliers.
Can I claim ITC if the supplier has not paid tax?
No. Credit is allowed only if the tax has been paid to the government by the supplier, which appears in GSTR-2B. If the supplier defaults, credit can be denied or reversed. We maintain a vendor risk list and advise on holding payments.
What is the 180-day rule?
If you do not pay the supplier within 180 days of the invoice date, the credit must be reversed with interest, and it can be reclaimed when you pay. We track the ageing of payables.
Which purchases are blocked from ITC?
Section 17(5) blocks items including motor vehicles (with exceptions), food and beverages, club memberships, personal use goods, and works contract for immovable property. We check the nature of each purchase before the claim.
What happens if I claim excess ITC?
Excess credit must be reversed with interest at 18% a year, and the department can issue a notice with penalty in case of fraud or suppression. A voluntary reversal before notice is much cheaper. We prepare the reversal workings.
Can ITC reconciliation be done for past years?
Yes. A clean-up for earlier years helps before a GST audit or a notice. The credit still claimable is limited by the section 16(4) time limit, so the older the year, the more is lost. We tell you what remains claimable.
What are the due dates for GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B?
For monthly filers, GSTR-1 is generally due by the 11th and GSTR-3B by the 20th of the following month. Quarterly (QRMP) filers file GSTR-1 quarterly and GSTR-3B by the 22nd or 24th depending on the state. Due dates are sometimes extended by notification, so we track the current notified date.
What is the late fee and interest for delayed GST returns?
Late fees accrue daily (₹50 a day for GSTR-3B, ₹20 a day if it is a nil return, subject to caps) and interest at 18% a year applies on tax paid late. Late filing can also block your next GSTR-1 and the e-way bill facility, so delay costs more than the fee alone.
Can I correct a mistake after filing a GST return?
GSTR-3B cannot be revised once filed; errors are corrected in a later month's return where the law permits. GSTR-1 errors can be amended through the amendment tables in a later GSTR-1 or through GSTR-1A. We check the figures against GSTR-2B and your books before filing, which prevents most corrections.
