GST Return Filing (GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B)

GST Return Filing: GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B

GST return filing means reporting your sales in GSTR-1 and paying tax and claiming input tax credit in GSTR-3B, monthly or quarterly under the QRMP scheme. SVT & Associates prepares both returns, matches credit with GSTR-2B and tracks every due date so late fee and interest are avoided.

How do monthly filing and the QRMP scheme differ?

Regular taxpayers file GSTR-1 by the 11th and GSTR-3B by the 20th of every month. Taxpayers with turnover up to ₹5 crore can opt for the Quarterly Return Monthly Payment (QRMP) scheme, filing returns quarterly and paying tax monthly through challan PMT-06, with the Invoice Furnishing Facility (IFF) for B2B sales in the first two months. The right choice depends on invoice volume and cash flow; we advise at registration and review it every year.

Why do we match input tax credit with GSTR-2B before every return?

Input credit is claimed on the basis of GSTR-2B, which shows what your suppliers have reported. Claiming credit that does not appear there leads to ASMT-10 notices, interest and reversal. A supplier's late filing delays your credit. We match each invoice before filing GSTR-3B and chase vendors for missing ones. See ITC reconciliation and GSTR-9 annual return. If a notice has already arrived, see GST notice reply.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is the late fee for GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B?
The late fee runs per day until the return is filed, with a lower daily rate and a cap for nil returns. Interest at 18% a year applies to unpaid tax in GSTR-3B. We work out the exact amount for the delay so that the payment is correct.
Do I need to file a return if there was no business?
Yes. A nil return is required every period for a registered taxpayer, otherwise the late fee applies and the portal blocks further filing. A nil GSTR-3B and GSTR-1 can be filed through SMS in some cases. We file nil returns on your behalf.
Can I claim ITC on all purchases?
No. Credit is blocked under section 17(5) for items such as motor vehicles (with exceptions), food and personal use, and requires a valid tax invoice, receipt of goods and the supplier having filed and paid. We separate eligible from ineligible credit.
What is the time limit to claim input credit?
Credit for an invoice must be claimed by 30 November following the end of the financial year, or the date of filing the annual return, whichever is earlier. Credit not claimed in time is lost. We run a year-end check in October.
What if I filed GSTR-3B with a wrong figure?
GSTR-3B cannot be revised once filed. The correction is made in a later period's return where the law permits, with interest on any short payment. We check figures against GSTR-1 and 2B before filing to avoid this.
When must I register for GST?
A supplier of goods must register once aggregate turnover crosses ₹40 lakh, and a supplier of services at ₹20 lakh, with lower limits for special-category states. Inter-state suppliers of services and e-commerce sellers must register earlier. We check your turnover and the registration route.
What are the due dates for GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B?
For monthly filers, GSTR-1 is generally due by the 11th and GSTR-3B by the 20th of the following month. Quarterly (QRMP) filers file GSTR-1 quarterly and GSTR-3B by the 22nd or 24th depending on the state. Due dates are sometimes extended by notification, so we track the current notified date.
What is the late fee and interest for delayed GST returns?
Late fees accrue daily (₹50 a day for GSTR-3B, ₹20 a day if it is a nil return, subject to caps) and interest at 18% a year applies on tax paid late. Late filing can also block your next GSTR-1 and the e-way bill facility, so delay costs more than the fee alone.
Can I correct a mistake after filing a GST return?
GSTR-3B cannot be revised once filed; errors are corrected in a later month's return where the law permits. GSTR-1 errors can be amended through the amendment tables in a later GSTR-1 or through GSTR-1A. We check the figures against GSTR-2B and your books before filing, which prevents most corrections.
