TDS Default and TRACES Correction

TDS Default, Notice and TRACES Correction Service

A TDS default is a demand raised on TRACES for short deduction, late deduction, late deposit or unmatched challans, usually with interest and a late filing fee. SVT & Associates reads the justification report, files correction statements and pays only the demand that is genuinely due.

Process

How do you correct a TDS return on TRACES?

A correction is filed by downloading the consolidated file from TRACES, editing the statement in the return preparation utility and uploading it with the provisional receipt number of the original return. Corrections can add or change PANs, challan details and amounts. After processing, a revised justification report shows what remains. Where the deductee's Form 26AS is affected, credit appears after the correction is processed. For regular filing see TDS return filing. For defaults that become income tax notices see notice replies.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How do I download the justification report?
Log in to TRACES with TAN credentials, request the justification report under 'Defaults' for the financial year and quarter, and download it after it is generated. We handle the request and the analysis.
Can interest on late deposit be waived?
No. Interest under section 201(1A) is mandatory and not waivable. A fee under 234E can be reduced only if the return was in fact filed on time. We check dates and challans carefully before you pay.
How long does a correction take to process?
Processing typically takes a few days to a couple of weeks after upload, depending on the department's queue. After processing, the justification report is refreshed. We follow up and report the revised demand.
What if the challan is paid under the wrong code?
A challan with a wrong major or minor head, or the wrong assessment year, can be corrected through the bank or the Assessing Officer within the time allowed, so the credit reaches the TDS return. We prepare the request.
What if the deductee is no longer a vendor?
The deductee's PAN still needs to be correct for credit. If the PAN is invalid, a correction with the right PAN is filed. We ask the vendor for the PAN and verify it on the portal.
What happens if I do not pay the demand?
An outstanding demand attracts interest, can be adjusted against your refunds and may block future filings or a TDS rate in some cases. If the demand is wrong, it should be corrected; if it is right, it should be paid and closed. We recommend after reading the report.
What are the due dates for TDS returns?
TDS returns are filed quarterly: 31 July, 31 October and 31 January for the first three quarters, and 31 May for the fourth. TDS deducted must be deposited by the 7th of the following month (30 April for March). Form 24Q covers salary, 26Q covers resident non-salary payments, and 27Q covers payments to non-residents.
What is the penalty for late TDS return filing?
A late filing fee under section 234E of ₹200 a day applies until the return is filed, capped at the TDS amount. Penalty under section 271H of ₹10,000 to ₹1 lakh can also apply if the return is not filed within a year or contains incorrect details. Late deposit of TDS attracts interest of 1% to 1.5% a month.
How do I correct a TDS return that has errors?
A correction statement is filed on the TRACES portal using the original provisional receipt number. Corrections can fix PAN errors, challan mismatches and deductee details. We download the justification report, find the exact default, and file the correction so the deductee's Form 26AS shows the credit.
