Local Context

Audit in Bhubaneswar: what is different here

Bhubaneswar is Odisha's capital and the administrative base for a state whose economy leans on minerals, steel and aluminium, with the Infocity IT cluster and the Mancheswar industrial estate in the city itself.

Suppliers and contractors to Odisha's mining and steel companies have long receivable cycles and large transport costs, so debtors, retention and freight accruals are audit focus areas. IT firms at Infocity need revenue and forex checks, and local traders need to know whether the tax audit limits apply to them.

Audit work for Bhubaneswar clients is planned around your records, not your postcode. A short scoping call comes first, then a document list, then testing from your data. Physical verification, when needed, is booked in advance with the person who will be on site.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you audit suppliers to mining and steel companies?

Yes. We review receivables ageing, retention, freight accruals and tax credits, and test whether long-outstanding items need provisions. Contracts and certified bills are the main records.

Which registrar covers Odisha companies?

Companies registered in Odisha generally file with the Registrar of Companies, Cuttack. Filing of annual accounts follows the AGM, so we schedule the audit around it.

Can you audit an Odisha firm online?

Yes. Most of the work is online, and for plant or stock verification we agree dates in advance.

Is a statutory audit mandatory for every private limited company?

Yes. Every company must appoint an auditor and get its accounts audited every year, whatever its turnover and even if it has little or no activity. Small company status relaxes some reporting requirements, not the audit itself. A new company's board must appoint its first auditor within 30 days of incorporation.

Who needs a tax audit, and what is the due date this year?

A business needs a tax audit if turnover is above Rs 1 crore (Rs 10 crore where cash receipts and cash payments are each 5% or less), a professional if gross receipts are above Rs 50 lakh, and certain presumptive-scheme cases also trigger it. For AY 2026-27 (FY 2025-26), CBDT's press release of 28 September 2026 moved the audit report date from 30 September to 21 October 2026 and the return date for covered audit cases from 31 October to 21 November 2026. Transfer pricing cases follow separate dates, so confirm which group you fall in.

When is an internal audit mandatory?

It is mandatory for every listed company. An unlisted public company needs one if paid-up capital is Rs 50 crore or more, turnover is Rs 200 crore or more, bank or financial-institution borrowings exceed Rs 100 crore, or deposits are Rs 25 crore or more. A private company needs one if turnover is Rs 200 crore or more or borrowings from banks and financial institutions exceed Rs 100 crore, tested on the preceding financial year. Smaller businesses can adopt it voluntarily, and some lenders and investors ask for it.

Can SVT & Associates audit my company and also keep its books?

No. Section 144 of the Companies Act bars a company's auditor from providing certain services to that company, including accounting and book-keeping, internal audit and design of financial information systems. We tell you this upfront so you do not end up with a conflict that a regulator or lender can challenge. If you need one of those services, we can arrange it through a separate engagement for a company we do not audit.

What documents do you need to start an audit?

Trial balance or the full accounting data file, bank statements and bank reconciliations, sales and purchase registers, GST returns and reconciliations, TDS returns and challans, fixed asset register, loan and borrowing confirmations, stock records, and the previous year's audited financials. Statutory records such as the minute book and registers are needed for companies. We send a checklist after the first call so you only collect what applies to you.
