Audit in Mumbai: what is different here

Mumbai is India's financial capital: the RBI, the BSE and most bank head offices sit here, so the lenders and auditors who read your accounts are used to clean, fully reconciled statements.

Mumbai trading houses in Masjid Bunder and Dana Bunder often sit close to the Rs 1 crore tax audit limit, and the cash test (5% or less of receipts and payments, which lifts the limit to Rs 10 crore) decides whether an audit is needed at all. Film and media production companies carry project-wise costs and advances that need careful cut-off testing, and shipping agents handle large pass-through receipts that must be shown correctly in turnover.

Our office is at Topiwala Centre in Goregaon West, so Mumbai clients can hand over records and meet the signing CA in person if they prefer. Most work still runs on shared folders and calls, which keeps the audit moving between meetings.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I meet the auditor in person in Mumbai?

Yes. Our office is at Topiwala Centre, Goregaon West, Mumbai 400104, open Monday to Saturday, 9:00 AM to 7:00 PM. Most clients start with a 20-minute scoping call and share records online, and visits are optional. Stock counts and site visits in Mumbai can be arranged on dates that suit your business.

Which registrar do Mumbai companies file annual accounts with?

Companies registered in Maharashtra file their annual financial statements and annual return with the Registrar of Companies in Mumbai or Pune, depending on the registered office address. The audited accounts are filed after the AGM, so the audit has to finish well before that date. We confirm the timeline when we scope your case.

Do Mumbai trading firms need a tax audit?

If turnover is above Rs 1 crore, a tax audit is needed unless cash receipts and cash payments are each 5% or less, in which case the limit is Rs 10 crore. Many Mumbai traders operate near that line, so we test the cash ratio on your actual ledgers before advising either way.

When is an internal audit mandatory?

It is mandatory for every listed company. An unlisted public company needs one if paid-up capital is Rs 50 crore or more, turnover is Rs 200 crore or more, bank or financial-institution borrowings exceed Rs 100 crore, or deposits are Rs 25 crore or more. A private company needs one if turnover is Rs 200 crore or more or borrowings from banks and financial institutions exceed Rs 100 crore, tested on the preceding financial year. Smaller businesses can adopt it voluntarily, and some lenders and investors ask for it.

Can SVT & Associates audit my company and also keep its books?

No. Section 144 of the Companies Act bars a company's auditor from providing certain services to that company, including accounting and book-keeping, internal audit and design of financial information systems. We tell you this upfront so you do not end up with a conflict that a regulator or lender can challenge. If you need one of those services, we can arrange it through a separate engagement for a company we do not audit.

What documents do you need to start an audit?

Trial balance or the full accounting data file, bank statements and bank reconciliations, sales and purchase registers, GST returns and reconciliations, TDS returns and challans, fixed asset register, loan and borrowing confirmations, stock records, and the previous year's audited financials. Statutory records such as the minute book and registers are needed for companies. We send a checklist after the first call so you only collect what applies to you.

How long does an audit take?

The main driver is how complete and reconciled your books are when we start. Clean books with bank reconciliations done move quickly, while backlog, missing vouchers or unreconciled GST and TDS add time. After reviewing your trial balance and documents, we give you a timeline in writing before you commit.

How much does an audit cost?

The ICAI does not prescribe audit fees. The fee depends on turnover, transaction volume, number of locations or branches, state of the books, and the reporting needed, such as CARO or internal financial controls. We scope your case for free and share a written estimate. You pay only after you accept it.
