Schedule

What are the advance tax due dates and percentages?

Advance tax is cumulative, so each date shows the share of your total estimated tax that must have been paid by then. Resident senior citizens without business income are exempt, and taxpayers under presumptive taxation (44AD and 44ADA) pay the whole amount in one instalment by 15 March. Capital gains and dividend income that arise late in the year do not attract 234C interest if the tax is paid in the next instalment or by 15 March.

15 JuneAt least 15%All taxpayers liable to advance tax (except presumptive scheme)
15 SeptemberAt least 45%Same
15 DecemberAt least 75%Same
15 March100%Same; the only date for presumptive taxpayers
Interest

What interest applies if advance tax is short or late?

Interest under section 234B is 1% a month on the shortfall if you have paid less than 90% of the assessed tax by 31 March, running from 1 April until you pay. Interest under 234C is 1% a month for each instalment shortfall, for three months (one month for the last instalment). A refund also earns interest at the same rate if you overpaid. We calculate it exactly so that the self-assessment challan before filing is the correct number. For income tax planning across regimes, see old vs new regime.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Who has to pay advance tax?
Anyone whose estimated tax after TDS for the year is ₹10,000 or more, including salaried people with large other income. Resident senior citizens with no business income are exempt. If you are unsure, send us your income details for a quick estimate.
Do I pay advance tax on capital gains?
Yes, once the gain arises. If a gain arises after the last-but-one instalment date, you can pay the tax in the remaining instalment, up to 15 March, without 234C interest on that gain. We determine the instalment window for each sale.
What if I overpay advance tax?
Excess advance tax is refunded after you file the return, with interest under 244A from 1 April of the assessment year. You can reduce the problem by revisiting the estimate at the December and March instalments. We update the estimate if your income changes.
How do I pay advance tax?
Pay online through the Income Tax portal or net banking using Challan 280 under the 'advance tax' type and the right assessment year. The challan must carry your PAN. We prepare the details and you pay from your own account.
Is advance tax needed for salaried people?
A salaried person is generally covered by TDS but may need advance tax if other income such as rent, interest or capital gains leaves a balance tax above ₹10,000. We check this when TDS on salary has been under-deducted. See salaried ITR filing.
What if I missed an instalment?
Pay as soon as you can; interest under 234C runs for the delay. Interest under 234B can also apply if the total paid by 31 March is below 90%. We calculate the interest so the final challan is accurate.
What is the last date to file an income tax return?
For individuals and HUFs who do not need an audit, the usual due date is 31 July after the financial year ends. Cases needing a tax audit normally get 31 October, and companies with transfer pricing reports 30 November. The government sometimes extends dates, so we confirm the notified date for your year before we start.
What happens if I miss the ITR due date?
You can still file a belated return under section 139(4), generally until 31 December of the assessment year, but with a late fee under section 234F (₹5,000, or ₹1,000 if total income is up to ₹5 lakh) and interest under 234A. Most losses cannot be carried forward in a belated return, which can cost more than the fee itself.
Do I need to e-verify my return after filing?
Yes. A return is treated as filed only after e-verification, which must be completed within 30 days of filing. You can verify with Aadhaar OTP, net banking, a pre-validated bank account or a demat account. We guide you through it and confirm the processed status on the portal afterwards.
