Local context

What do taxpayers in Bengaluru usually need help with?

Bengaluru has the country's largest concentration of start-up employees and founders. Employee stock options, sale of unlisted shares, angel investments and foreign remittances are the topics we see most often, along with Karnataka professional tax on salaries.

The people we most often see in Bengaluru are software and product companies, start-ups, venture-funded founders and a large body of salaried employees with ESOPs. Karnataka levies professional tax on salaried employees and professionals, so employers and professionals must register and file it separately from income tax.

Illustrative case

What does a typical case look like in Bengaluru?

Illustrative example (not a real client): A Bengaluru founder sells shares of her unlisted start-up after holding them for 30 months and gets ₹40 lakh of gain. The holding is over 24 months, so it is long-term and taxed at 12.5% without indexation. If she reinvests under section 54F in a house, she could reduce this tax. We would compare both and check the conditions.

Every case is different; we run your actual numbers and documents before advising.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to visit the office to use your services from Bengaluru?
No. Most clients from Bengaluru share documents on WhatsApp or email, sign authorisations online and speak to the CA on a call or video. The office is in Goregaon West, Mumbai, and you are welcome to visit by appointment.
Does Karnataka have its own tax rules?
Income tax and the central GST law are the same across India. State differences are in professional tax, stamp duty and the valuation rate used for property (the guidance value in Karnataka), and in state GST administration. Karnataka levies professional tax on salaried employees and professionals, so employers and professionals must register and file it separately from income tax.
How are ESOPs from Bengaluru start-ups taxed?
The value on exercise, minus the exercise price, is taxed as a perquisite. If the company is an eligible start-up, tax on that perquisite can be deferred for a period under section 192. Later sale gives a capital gain from the exercise-date value.
Does Karnataka professional tax apply to me?
Karnataka levies professional tax on salaried employees and professionals, generally up to ₹2,500 a year. It is deducted by the employer and is separate from income tax. Self-employed professionals register and pay it directly.
How do I get a quote for my case in Bengaluru?
Fill the form on this page or WhatsApp us your situation. A CA reviews your documents free of charge and sends a fixed fee in writing before any work begins. Government charges are shown separately.
What is the last date to file an income tax return?
For individuals and HUFs who do not need an audit, the usual due date is 31 July after the financial year ends. Cases needing a tax audit normally get 31 October, and companies with transfer pricing reports 30 November. The government sometimes extends dates, so we confirm the notified date for your year before we start.
What happens if I miss the ITR due date?
You can still file a belated return under section 139(4), generally until 31 December of the assessment year, but with a late fee under section 234F (₹5,000, or ₹1,000 if total income is up to ₹5 lakh) and interest under 234A. Most losses cannot be carried forward in a belated return, which can cost more than the fee itself.
Do I need to e-verify my return after filing?
Yes. A return is treated as filed only after e-verification, which must be completed within 30 days of filing. You can verify with Aadhaar OTP, net banking, a pre-validated bank account or a demat account. We guide you through it and confirm the processed status on the portal afterwards.
