about this service

CSR-1 Registration: How It Works

CSR-1 is the form through which an NGO registers on the MCA portal to receive CSR funds from companies. It requires 12A and 80G to be in place and the NGO's PAN to be active.

A CA certifies the form. We check that your registration details, PAN and past accounts are consistent so the form is not rejected.

Once approved, you receive a CSR registration number that donors' CSR teams check before releasing funds.

CSR-1 is often delayed because 12A or 80G details do not match the PAN records. We verify these first and then prepare the CA certification the form needs.

Timeline and cost: there is no separate government fee for the form, and processing on the MCA portal is usually quick once the form and certificate are correct. Our fee is fixed and quoted upfront.

what is it

Trust, Society, Section 8, 12A, 80G & FCRA — Explained

A charitable Trust, Society or Section 8 Company is the legal wrapper for your NGO. 12A exempts it from income tax, 80G lets your donors claim a deduction, CSR-1 lets it receive CSR funds, and FCRA lets it accept foreign donations. Most NGOs eventually need several of these together.

simplest, 2 trustees

Trust

Governed by the Indian Trusts Act / your state's Public Trusts Act. Needs only 2 trustees, no AGM. Best for small charitable bodies and family-run philanthropy, common across Maharashtra and South India.

membership-based, 7+ members

Society

Registered under the Societies Registration Act, 1860 (or the state variant). Needs 7 or more members and a managing committee. Suits membership-driven and community organisations.

strongest governance

Section 8 Company

Registered under the Companies Act, 2013 with the ROC. Needs at least 2 directors. Preferred by institutional and CSR donors, and generally the smoothest route for FCRA.

Unlike a single certificate, NGO registration is a bundle of separate government filings, each with its own effort and timeline. We quote per service so you only pay for what your NGO actually needs, and combine services into a package quote on request.

questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Do all NGOs need CSR-1? +
Only NGOs that want to receive CSR funds from companies. It is not needed for ordinary individual donations.
Is 80G needed before CSR-1? +
Companies generally expect the NGO to hold 12A and 80G, and the CSR-1 form asks for those details. Applying for CSR-1 without them usually fails or delays. We sequence 12A, 80G and CSR-1 so each registration supports the next.
Trust, Society or Section 8 Company — which one should I register? +
It depends on your goals. A Trust needs only 2 trustees and is the simplest to run, good for small charitable work. A Society needs 7+ members and suits membership-based organisations. A Section 8 Company has the strongest governance and is generally preferred by CSR donors and for FCRA. We recommend the right structure after understanding your activities and funding plan, before you pay anything.
What is 12A registration? +
12A registration exempts your Trust, Society or Section 8 Company from paying income tax on its surplus income. Without it, even donations received can be taxed.
What is 80G registration? +
80G lets your donors claim a tax deduction on the amount they donate to you. It's usually applied for together with 12A, using Form 10A on the income tax portal, and both need periodic renewal.
When can we apply for FCRA registration? +
Normal FCRA registration needs at least 3 years of existence and a track record of charitable activity. If you need to accept a specific foreign contribution before that, Prior Permission under Section 12 can be applied for instead.
How long does the whole process take? +
Trust, Society or Section 8 Company registration typically takes 10-20 working days depending on the state and Registrar. 12A/80G approval and FCRA registration are on government timelines outside our control, we'll give you a realistic estimate upfront and track it for you.
