FCRA Registration: How It Works

FCRA registration is required to accept foreign contributions. Normal registration needs at least three years of existence, a record of charitable activity and a designated FCRA account at the SBI New Delhi main branch.

We check eligibility first, prepare the Form FC-3 application with the required documents, and coordinate the bank account so the application is not rejected on technical grounds.

If the NGO is too new, Prior Permission for a specific foreign source may be the practical alternative.

The most common rejection reasons are an ineligible track record, missing FCRA-designated bank account details and inconsistent office addresses. We cross-check all three before Form FC-3 is submitted.

Timeline and cost: the government fee is paid directly at actuals, and processing is on the Ministry's timeline. We prepare a complete file to reduce back-and-forth and track every query.

what is it

Trust, Society, Section 8, 12A, 80G & FCRA — Explained

A charitable Trust, Society or Section 8 Company is the legal wrapper for your NGO. 12A exempts it from income tax, 80G lets your donors claim a deduction, CSR-1 lets it receive CSR funds, and FCRA lets it accept foreign donations. Most NGOs eventually need several of these together.

simplest, 2 trustees

Trust

Governed by the Indian Trusts Act / your state's Public Trusts Act. Needs only 2 trustees, no AGM. Best for small charitable bodies and family-run philanthropy, common across Maharashtra and South India.

membership-based, 7+ members

Society

Registered under the Societies Registration Act, 1860 (or the state variant). Needs 7 or more members and a managing committee. Suits membership-driven and community organisations.

strongest governance

Section 8 Company

Registered under the Companies Act, 2013 with the ROC. Needs at least 2 directors. Preferred by institutional and CSR donors, and generally the smoothest route for FCRA.

Why a Table Instead of One Flat Fee?

Unlike a single certificate, NGO registration is a bundle of separate government filings, each with its own effort and timeline. We quote per service so you only pay for what your NGO actually needs, and combine services into a package quote on request.

questions

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the FCRA registration fee? +
The government fee for the application is separate from our professional fee and is paid at actuals. We give you the current figure before you pay.
Do I need a special bank account for FCRA? +
Yes. An FCRA-designated account at the SBI New Delhi main branch is required to receive foreign contributions, and a separate utilisation account may be used. We coordinate the account opening with the application so details match across documents.
Trust, Society or Section 8 Company — which one should I register? +
It depends on your goals. A Trust needs only 2 trustees and is the simplest to run, good for small charitable work. A Society needs 7+ members and suits membership-based organisations. A Section 8 Company has the strongest governance and is generally preferred by CSR donors and for FCRA. We recommend the right structure after understanding your activities and funding plan, before you pay anything.
What is 12A registration? +
12A registration exempts your Trust, Society or Section 8 Company from paying income tax on its surplus income. Without it, even donations received can be taxed.
What is 80G registration? +
80G lets your donors claim a tax deduction on the amount they donate to you. It's usually applied for together with 12A, using Form 10A on the income tax portal, and both need periodic renewal.
When can we apply for FCRA registration? +
Normal FCRA registration needs at least 3 years of existence and a track record of charitable activity. If you need to accept a specific foreign contribution before that, Prior Permission under Section 12 can be applied for instead.
How long does the whole process take? +
Trust, Society or Section 8 Company registration typically takes 10-20 working days depending on the state and Registrar. 12A/80G approval and FCRA registration are on government timelines outside our control, we'll give you a realistic estimate upfront and track it for you.
