PTRC due dates range from monthly to half-yearly depending on the state, and PTEC is usually an annual payment. Missing a due date starts a penalty clock immediately in most states.

Your business figures and PAN are blurred here, this is a sample. Your actual registration shows every field clearly to you.
What matters before you pay: the correct category, the right state portal, a verifiable acknowledgement number.
Ask a CA FirstA state-level tax under Article 276 of the Constitution, capped at ₹2,500 a year per person. Registering under the wrong category, PTEC instead of PTRC or the reverse, is the most common mistake we see.
For professionals, proprietors, partners and directors who pay professional tax on their own income. One-time registration, then an annual payment.
For any business with even one salaried employee in a PT state. Requires deducting PT from salary every month and filing periodic returns.
Professional tax due dates aren't uniform across India, and PTEC and PTRC often follow different schedules even within the same state. PTEC is typically an annual, one-time-per-year payment for the individual. PTRC, because it involves monthly salary deductions, is usually filed monthly in states like Maharashtra, Karnataka and Gujarat, though smaller employers sometimes qualify for quarterly filing instead. Tamil Nadu and Puducherry are the clearest exception: because PT there is collected by local municipal bodies, the cycle is half-yearly, not monthly. Missing a due date doesn't just risk a late fee — in most states, the penalty clock starts from the day after the due date, not from when the mistake is noticed, so a filing that's slightly late and one that's several months late are treated very differently. Yes. This is a standardised state-portal filing for our team, not a custom compliance audit. The fee reflects volume across states we already work in daily, not a shortcut on accuracy.

"Registered as a consultant, didn't realise I needed PTEC myself, not just PTRC for my two employees. Caught before it became a penalty."
"Missed our registration window by four months. SVT handled the late registration and got the penalty down to the minimum."
