PTEC is professional tax you pay on your own income. PTRC is professional tax you deduct from employees' salaries and deposit on their behalf. Most established businesses need to check both.

A sample layout of what a PTEC/PTRC acknowledgement contains, the details that matter blurred out here.
Your business figures and PAN are blurred here, this is a sample. Your actual registration shows every field clearly to you.
What matters before you pay: the correct category, the right state portal, a verifiable acknowledgement number.
Ask a CA FirstA state-level tax under Article 276 of the Constitution, capped at ₹2,500 a year per person. Registering under the wrong category, PTEC instead of PTRC or the reverse, is the most common mistake we see.
For professionals, proprietors, partners and directors who pay professional tax on their own income. One-time registration, then an annual payment.
For any business with even one salaried employee in a PT state. Requires deducting PT from salary every month and filing periodic returns.
The two most confused terms in professional tax are PTEC and PTRC, and the confusion usually comes from assuming they're alternatives — pick one — when they actually answer two different questions. PTEC (Professional Tax Enrolment Certificate) is what you register and pay on your own income: self-employed professionals, proprietors, partners and directors drawing fees all need it personally. PTRC (Professional Tax Registration Certificate) is what an employer registers to deduct professional tax from employee salaries and deposit it with the state — it's a collection mechanism, not a personal tax on the employer. A single business often needs both at once: a company registers PTRC to cover its salaried staff, while its own directors, if they draw fees outside payroll, separately need PTEC. The test isn't 'which one applies to my business' — it's 'does anyone here earn income personally, and does anyone here get paid a salary someone else must deduct from'.
| PTEC | PTRC | |
|---|---|---|
| Who registers | The individual earning income | The employer |
| What it covers | Your own professional/business income | Salaries you pay to employees |
| Who pays | You, personally | Deducted from employee pay, deposited by employer |
| Typical holder | Proprietor, partner, director, freelancer | Company, LLP, firm, any employer |

Yes. This is a standardised state-portal filing for our team, not a custom compliance audit. The fee reflects volume across states we already work in daily, not a shortcut on accuracy.
"We had employees in three states and three different due dates. SVT set up PTRC everywhere and gave us one filing calendar."
"Registered as a consultant, didn't realise I needed PTEC myself, not just PTRC for my two employees. Caught before it became a penalty."
"Missed our registration window by four months. SVT handled the late registration and got the penalty down to the minimum."
