First, take the closing balance from the bank statement and the closing balance from your cash book or bank ledger for the same date. Tick every entry that appears in both. The unticked items are your differences.
Enter timing differences in the first half: deposits in transit and cheques not yet presented. Enter items the bank has done and you have not in the second half: charges, interest and direct credits. After adjusting both sides, the two totals must agree.
A remaining difference usually equals a single entry, twice a single entry or a transposed figure, such as 540 booked as 450. Divide the difference by nine to spot a transposition, and look for an entry of that amount or half the amount.
If the difference persists, reconcile a shorter period, such as one week, and widen it gradually. Keep a log of the unmatched items and clear them each month so the list never becomes long.

At least once a month for every account, on the last day of the month. Businesses with many daily transactions or online collections may reconcile weekly. Preparing it monthly keeps each investigation limited to thirty days of entries. A weekly cut-off suits cash-heavy retail.
Cheques are valid for three months from the date of issue. After that, the bank usually returns them, so an old unpresented cheque should be reviewed, reissued or reversed in the books. We list cheques older than 90 days every month.
