Quick answer
A stock certificate for an insurance claim is a CA-signed statement of the stock a business held on the date of a loss, such as a fire or flood. It is rebuilt from the books (opening stock, purchases and sales up to that date) and helps the insurer's surveyor assess the value of stock lost.

Working out stock on the date of loss
After a fire, flood or theft, the physical stock may be gone, so the value lost has to be worked out from records. The usual approach starts with the last verified stock, often the year-end balance sheet or the latest bank stock statement, adds purchases and production up to the date of loss, and deducts the cost of goods sold, worked out using the gross profit rate of past years. Salvage is then deducted. The insurer's surveyor makes the final assessment; a CA certificate gives the surveyor a clear, documented starting point.
Under-insurance is the most common reason stock claims are cut. Most fire policies apply an average clause: if the sum insured is less than the actual value of stock at the time of loss, the claim is reduced in the same proportion. Stock declaration policies work differently, based on the periodic declarations you filed. We check the policy type and your past declarations, because a bank stock statement showing much higher stock than your insurance declarations can weaken the claim.
