Quick answer
A stock certificate for a steel or hardware trader is a CA-signed statement of stock by weight, grade and size, with unpaid creditors and trade debtors, on a stated date. Steel stockists and pipe and hardware dealers use it for bank CC/OD drawing power, limit renewals and GST ITC-01 claims above ₹2 lakh.

Tonnes, grades and fast-moving prices
Steel is bought and sold by weight, and prices can move sharply within weeks. A stockist's statement needs quantity in tonnes by product (TMT bars, sheets, coils, structurals, pipes) and a valuation basis that holds up when prices fall. We value at the lower of cost and current market price, so a price drop is reflected before the bank's stock auditor finds it, and we reconcile weights with purchase bills and weighbridge records.
Hardware and sanitary dealers have the opposite problem: thousands of small item codes rather than a few heavy ones. Slow-moving sizes and discontinued ranges build up quietly. We summarise stock by category, flag items with no movement over a long period, and deduct unpaid creditors to arrive at paid stock. Many steel traders buy on short credit from mills or distributors, so creditors can be a large share of stock.
